The project involves the construction of a standard pitch, race track, terraces, recreation facilities, perimeter wall, changing rooms and ablution blocks, among other facilities.

It will take six months to complete the project located in the sprawling Mwea plains. The stadium has been in deplorable state for decades and residents usually described it as an eyesore of the region.

Early this year, President Uhuru Kenyatta expressed concern over the poor state of the facility when he toured the region and held a meeting inside the stadium.

He said it was a shame that the stadium, which lacks adequate facilities and floods during rainy seasons, couldn’t be used by athletes. He ordered that money be allocated for the stadium for repair work to start in the shortest time possible.

State Department for Public Works Principal Secretary Gordon Kihalangwa has confirmed that construction work had started at the site,  and government engineers were closely monitoring the project to ensure that it meets the standard and is completed on time.

"I have visited the site and the project is going on well. The contractor is expected to do a good job," Kihalangwa said.

"Money for the project has been availed. The stadium must be completed and be handed over to residents on time," he added.

The PS said the State is undertaking many projects across the country for the benefit of all Kenyans and urged contractors should not do shoddy jobs.

"Any contractor who will not perform his work well will have his contract cancelled without any negotiations," he added.

Mwea East Deputy County Commissioner Fred Ayieko said the contractor has enough machinery on the ground to undertake the project.
