Nzoia dominates to lift schools Term Two 'A' overall title.

Nzoia Region retained the overall team title to underline their dominance in the National Secondary Schools Term Two ‘A’ Games, which ended on Saturday at Kangaru School in Embu County.

The team collected 60 points after winning the newly introduced football Under-16 and handball titles, but lost the Rugby Sevens crown to Metropolitan Region’s Laiser Hill.

Lake Region finished second with 50 points, one point ahead of Mau, who were third with 49 points.

Metropolitan Region finished a disappointing fourth with Aberdare and Coastal regions finishing fifth and sixth respectively. Hosts Highland Region came seventh ahead of Northern Region, who collected a paltry eight points in bottom place.

Nzoia stamped their authority in handball as St Luke’s Kimilili and Moi Girls Kamusinga successfully defended their boys’ and girls’ titles respectively. For Kimilili, it was a record eighth crown, while Kamusinga lifted their fifth national title.

“We view sports not just as an extra-curricular activity, but something that will help the youth make a name for themselves in the future,” Nzoia Region secretary general Robert Mukhwana told Daily Nation Sport.

EMERGENCE OF TALENT

The Under 16 football competition saw the emergence of new talent in both the boys’ and girls’ matches. Boys’ winners St Anthony’s snatched all the individual awards, with Philip Mayaka clinching the Most Valuable Player (MVP’s) award.

Juma Bwire walked away with the Golden Boot while Sheikh Aleeley bagged Best Goalkeeper award. The girls’ awards were shared among the top three schools with Abwao’s Tina Turner awarded MVP, Jescah Sironya took the golden boot while Olympics Edith Ogindo was the best goalkeeper.

Metropolitan dominated Rugby Sevens. Laiser Hill were crowned champions as Upper Hill settled for second best. Upper Hill’s Saidi Abdalla emerged MVP.

Although Mau dominated athletics, they were given a run for their money by Lake and Nzoia. Kaya Tiwi felled giants Obambo 26-24 to bag the netball title in their maiden appearance.

Focus now shifts to the national Term Two ‘B’ Games, which will be held in Kisumu next month. Thereafter, the East Africa Games that will take the centre stage in Eldoret in August.

National Rugby Sevens coach Benjamin Ayimba and his assistant, Paul Murunga, as well as officials from the Kenya Handball Federation attended the games to scout for talent.
