What you need to know:

  • NSL chairman Nicholas Ochieng said an independent body will streamline the running of the competition in order for the  league to secure sponsorship.
  • He said that they will also push for the Caretaker Committee or the body that will take over running of the competition after six months to take the responsibility of paying the match officials to help stem poor officiating that has bedevilled the game in Kenya.

Kenyan Premier League clubs will Wednesday morning meet the newly appointed Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Caretaker Committee headed by retired Judge Aaron Ringera at Nyayo National Stadium.

They will hold discussions on the resumption of top leagues that were suspended for two weeks, among other issues.

The committee suspended the FKF Premier League, FKF National Super League, FKF Women’s Premier League and women’s Division One leagues on November 12 after Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed disbanded the FKF leadership under Nick Mwendwa.

The football chief is fighting accusations of misuse of public funds in court.

The Ringera team is in office for six months, and one of its main tasks is to oversee election of new office bearers. World football governing Fifa has threatened to ban Kenya over the changes.

The majority of FKF-PL teams including the big two - Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards - want the league to be run by an independent body.

The embattled Mwendwa took over the running the top-flight league from an independent company, the Kenyan Premier League, whose mandate was to run until the end of the 2019/20 season but it was cut short by Covid-19.

Mwendwa renamed the league FKF-PL under new sponsors BetKing in a five-year Sh1.2 billion deal.

In the pact that was clouded in controversy, every club was entitled to Sh8 million per season from gaming firm BetKing and StarTimes was brought on board as the official broadcast channel.

But clubs complained that they were shortchanged. The secretive BetKing sponsorship ended as abruptly as it was started.

At the same time, the National Super League clubs have also added their voice on the running of the league, saying  they will push for an independent body to take charge.

NSL chairman Nicholas Ochieng said an independent body will streamline the running of the competition in order for the  league to secure sponsorship.

He said that they will also push for the Caretaker Committee or the body that will take over running of the competition after six months to take the responsibility of paying the match officials to help stem poor officiating that has bedevilled the game in Kenya.
