Munya: Kinoru Stadium a project of county government

Meru Governor Peter Munya has asked the national government to deliver on its promise of building five new stadiums instead of taking over sports facilities being constructed by county governments.

Munya has also vowed to block Sports Kenya from taking over the construction of the second phase of Kinoru Stadium, saying the facility has been a county project.

Munya instead asked the national government to channel resources for the stadium through the county government. The facility has been earmarked to host some matches of the 2018 African Nations Championship.

“The national and county governments have clear roles stipulated in the constitution. We will not allow the national government to undertake county duties,” governor Munya said.

Governor Munya said Sports Kenya did not follow the right procedure in advertising the tender for the second phase of construction works at Kinoru Stadium as the county government was not consulted.

But chairman of Sports Kenya, Fred Muteti, refuted the claims, saying they have had a series of meeting with counties and agreed that Sports Kenya will undertake the second phase of construction works at the stadium.

Munya was speaking on Sunday at Kinoru Stadium after attending a SportPesa Premier league match between Gor Mahia and Sofapaka. Sofapaka won the match 2-0.

Munya insisted that the remaining work in the facility will be undertaken by the county government despite Sport Kenya advertising tenders.

This comes days after an inspection tour of the stadium by Confederation of African Football officials.
