Fourteen of Athletics Kenya’s 16 branches have vowed to hold a special general meeting without the approval of embattled AK President Isaiah Kiplagat.

This comes after Kiplagat, through his lawyers, had said on Saturday that he would neither resign nor call for a special general meeting as demanded by the regions.

Kiplagat also said the 14 regions didn’t follow the stipulated channel while making the demands.

The regions have called for Kiplagat’s resignation and a special general meeting before October 31.

“They acted in breach of the (AK) Constitution and Rules of the Federation. Such conduct has serious consequences in view of the express provisions of Article 5.1. (a),” Kiplagat said.

Article 5.1 of the AK constitution says members must comply with guidelines and observe the constitution, regulations and resolutions of the Executive Committee as well as policies and procedures of the federation.

CONSTITUTIONAL VIOLATION

AK Kenya Police Service chairman, Jonathan Kosgei, said they had no problem with AK but its president whom they accuse of violating federation’s constitution.

While calling for the special general meeting, Kosgei said they had complied with Article 25 of the Constitution by serving AK headquarters with a notice. “We gave Kiplagat until October 31 but seemingly, he is not taking things seriously as usual hence our move to convene an SGM soon as provided by the Constitution,” Koskei said.

“We have finalised everything and we shall be calling the delegates soon.”

Koskei said Kiplagat had gone against the constitution when he co-opted weight members to the executive committee instead of five, thereby contravening Article 19 (2 (j).

“He protected a member (Central Rift chairman Abraham Mutai) who was convicted of incitement and sentenced to two-year probation by failing to remove him from office in according to Article 15(1)(e)(VI),” Koskei said.

“In light of the above it’s clear that there are legitimate grounds for the AK President to step aside,” AK President said.

Nairobi region chairman Barnabas Korir said their demands for an inquiry into the 2011 Daegu World Championships and 2013 Moscow World Championships still remain.
