Police in Murang'a are searching for a 21-year-old single mother of two suspected of stabbing to death her two-year-old son and inflicting serious injuries on the other, aged four.

She allegedly attempted to hang herself thereafter. Investigations into the incidents, which occurred on Sunday afternoon in Kianjogu village, are underway.

"The young mother had visited her home village for Christmas festivities. She was working as a house help in Kiria-ini, leaving her two children under the care of her mother," County Criminal Investigations Officer Daniel Kandie said.

Withdrawn

Neighbours told Nation.africa that she was withdrawn throughout the festive season and was no longer the jovial woman they knew.

"She looked disturbed and kept to herself. She had suddenly become sullen and did not appear to be in a hurry to go back to her employer," said Jacinta Gathoni, adding that they heard no commotion from the house.

"Their grandmother was away...we only learnt of the tragedy when she came back and screamed upon stumbling on the two sons lying in a pool of blood."

A rope was found hanging from the roof in the sitting room.

"It is perceived that the mother intended to take her own life after stabbing the two. But it appears she had a change of heart and decided to run away," a police report reads.

The four-year-old son was admitted to the Murang'a Level Five Hospital in critical condition, while the body of the two-year-old was taken to Muriranjas Hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem.
