JUST BRENDA: Should I keep my child from seeing her father?

Hi Brenda,

Thanks for the good work. I have been single mum for three years now and the baby daddy sees our child whenever he wants. The problem is that he stopped providing for her. The girl loves him and I can’t stop her from seeing him.

I tried to go to court over it but I did not have the energy to follow through with it. I have a good mind to keep the child away from him until he decides to man up. Or what do you suggest I do?

You can't stop a man from seeing his child unless there's an actual problem there, like violence. It just isn't fair to do that. Unfortunately, neglect isn't a strong enough cause.

In the same way that you can't stop him from seeing his child, you can't make a man be responsible. He either wants to or he doesn't. You've realised he doesn’t and at some point your daughter will be able to make her own verdict.

Give her the chance to make her own judgments.
