What you need to know:

  • Code Red Entertainment team leader DJ Stylez, aka Allan Muigai, is comfortable with controversy. Since he formed Code Red in 2002, many top DJs have gone through his hands, but most of them have left, accusing him of many ills.

Buzz: What’s up with Code Red right now?

Doing what we do best, taking the entertainment industry to the next level. We have a TV show, ‘Vibe City’, then ‘Throwback Thursdays’ at Changez Club every week, and now the record label, The Red Room, soon to be rebranded as the Red Republic. Our DJs, Mr T and Kaytrixx, are on Str8 Up show too.

Why did Code Red leave Capital FM?

Growth and change of direction. We had to grow our wings and Capital FM allowed us to do so.

Some of the top DJs in Kenya, from DJ Dru to DJ Prime, DJ Creme, W-DJ, Mr Cee, Mr French, Leo Faya, have all worked with you but left. What has been the biggest problem?

The vision, man. It’s a matter of growth. DJs come, learn a few tricks and they become their own people outside the unit. That’s why I always let them go and follow their dreams.

Do you think you are successful in the industry?

It depends on how you measure success. But one thing is clear, I will go down the entertainment industry history as one of the DJs who have revolutionized the game, especially when it comes to radio and TV deejaying, combined with club deejaying.

Are you going out with Eve D’Souza?

I’ve heard those rumors, too. Tell you what, Eve and I are very tight and we work well together, friendship is a key ingredient in business. How can you work successfully with someone you don’t care about or share the same vision?

New cars and high-end racing bikes. Is your business doing that well?

I love speed and it’s always a release for me. When stressed, I call up a few bikers and we are in Nakuru in 45 mins. or cars, every man has his future dreams and ambitions. If I want to have my own jet in future, I work towards it and make sure I get it. What I drive or own is a result of the dreams I have always had and invested in.

Any signs of you getting hitched any time soon?

I will announce at the right time.

At some point there was major beef between Code Red and rival DJ unit Blackstar. Then it it died, what happened?

It’s called the battle for supremacy. Almost all the members of Blackstar were from Code Red, so there were little differences that we had to settle down before we moved on swiftly, that’s why there was beef. But then people realised that we all have to make money and develop our units.

Would you hack it being a solo DJ, without attaching yourself to any unit?

Hell yeah. I’m in a DJ unit because I love seeing people grow from one point to the other. It’s my passion not my weakness.
Which is the best gig you’ve ever played in?

The MAMAs, held in Nairobi last year. I played for Africa to the whole world.

What do you plan for Code Red?

Code Red Entertaining is about to become a one-stop shop as far as showbiz is concerned. If you need a DJ, sound, MC, artiste and proper event management, Code Red is the place to go. I know I can pull it off because I am great at what I do and I have around me, the best people to help me execute it.
