A fisherman was on Wednesday night killed by a hippopotamus at Alum Beach in Kayoo West Sub Location in Homa Bay County.

Mr Michael Otieno Osano, 54, failed to return home from a fishing expedition on Wednesday night, prompting his family to mount a search.

His damaged boat was found the following day before his fellow fishermen found his body, which had serious injuries, the following day.

West Karachuonyo Ward Beach Management Unit Chairperson Samuel Osendo said the body was moved to Kendu Adventist Mission Hospital mortuary.

Fishermen at the beach have called on Kenya Wildlife Service to intervene to help reduce cases of human wildlife conflict in Lake Victoria.

Rachuonyo North Sub-County Deputy Police Commander Nelson Omwenga urged residents to be careful while in the lake to prevent cases of human wildlife conflict

“We have talked to the KWS to look into the matter. They have gone to the ground to assess the situation before an appropriate action can be taken,” Mr Omwenga said.
