Police in Bungoma have recovered two empty cash boxes believed to have been used to ferry Sh25 million stolen from a Kimilili bank yesterday.

According to Bungoma County Criminal Investigations boss Mr Joseph Ondoro, the boxes were dumped near a homestead in Bumula and did not have a single coin.

"A woman at the homestead discovered them near her gate and alerted police officers on Tuesday night," he told the Nation on Wednesday.

According to Mr Ondoro, the thugs who robbed Ushirika Bank numbered five. However, no one has been arrested so far in connection with the daring heist, with police saying a manhunt is still on for the suspects believed to have fled to Uganda.

They carried out the attack just a few minutes after the cash arrived at Ushirika Bank from Cooperative Bank - which works with the lender to pay farmers their dues.

CCTV footage shows they were armed with AK 47 riffles.

“They are seen arriving at the bank five hours earlier and idling around," the police boss said on Wednesday.

Almost immediately after the money arrived, the thugs struck and made away with it.

A bank manager and two police officers were injured in the Tuesday afternoon attack. They are hospitalised at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.

Police say they are working with their Ugandan counterparts to trace the robbers.
