Updates:

  • Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba kicked out of the chamber by Speaker Amason Kingi. She protested the decision by the speaker to end the debate and allow Governor Kawira Mwangaza make her final submission to the Senate for ten minutes before the senators take a vote.
  • The special sitting is Gazetted to proceed until midnight.
  • In her speech, Ms Kawira used only a fraction of her ten minutes to apologise. She didn't exhaust her minutes.
  • Meru Senator Murungi Kathuri is given five minutes to address the House. Says Meru has problems. Urges colleagues to consider all the issues raised against Ms Kawira when making their decisions.
  • Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, who moved the motion, responds after the debate. He says the people of Meru need the guidance of the Senate regardless of whether Ms Kawira is impeached or saved. Urges colleagues to vote with conscience.
  • In her impeachment, Ms Kawira is facing seven charges including misappropriation and misuse of county resources, nepotism and related unethical practices, bullying, vilification and demeaning other leaders, illegal appointments, contempt of court, illegal naming of a public road after her husband and the contempt of the county assembly.
  • Senators are on a 10-minute break ahead of voting on the 7 charges. The vote will be by delegation. The voting will be electronic.
  • If even one charge is substantiated (YES), Ms Kawira leaves office. Senators to vote 7 times, one for each of the 7 charges.
