Kisumu stake title claim with St Anthony's win

Lake Region’s Kisumu Day underlined their title credentials yesterday after beating Nzoia’s St Anthony's 2-0 in their final Group ‘A’ match on the third day of the Airtel Rising Stars secondary schools national Term Two 'B' Games in Machakos.
Denis Ochieng and Said Tsuma scored on either side of the half to give the lakeside school the vital victory that ensured they finished top of their pool. St Anthony's finished second with four points to also make the last four.
"We came into the match with no pressure because we had already qualified for the semis after two wins. The pressure was on them (St Anthony’s) and this worked to our advantage," said Kisumu Day coach Dan Otieno.
Northern Region's Garissa High finished third in the pool with two points after playing out to a 2-2 draw with Highland's Kathungi.
In Pool B, Laiser Hill thumped Coast Region’s Waa Boys 5-1 to top their group while Passenga finished second to book their semi-final slot after hard fought 1-0 win over Mau Region's Simotwo High.
In girls’ football, former champions Olympic Mixed advanced to the semi-final after playing out to a 1-1 draw with St John's Kaloleni in an ill-tempered Pool A clash.
St John's topped the pool with seven points followed by Olympic with five points while Wiyeta Girls (Nzoia) claimed third spot as Kirigara finished bottom with no point.
KOBALA EDGED
In the other pool, Nginda Girls edged out Lake Region's Kobala Girls 1-0 to finish top with nine points. Both teams had already qualified for the semis and opted to field their fringe players in the dead rubber encounter.
In boys’ volleyball, champions Malava beat Ngungani of Highlands 3-0 (25-15 25-10 25-15) to finish on top of pool A ahead of Coast Region's Mivumoni who beat Tetu High 3-0 (25-17,26-24,25-21).
In Pool B, Metropolitan's Hospital Hill also claimed top spot after beating Cheptil Boys (Mau Region) 3-0 (25-21 25-23 20-25) in their final pool match. Cheptil finished second with to book a place in Friday's semi-finals.
"It was important to top our pool so that we go into the semis full of confidence and also avoid Malava who we hope to meet in the final," said Hospital Hill captain Cornelius Kiprono.
In girls' volleyball, Nzoia Region’s Lugulu Girls beat St John's Kaloleni (Coast) 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-10) in their last pool A match to finish second with six points. Champions Kwanthanze topped the pool with nine points after a routine 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-14) win over Sega Girls (Lake Region).
In Pool B, AIC Kosirai finished on top after thrashing Northern Region’s Nep Girls 3-0 (25-4, 25-0, 25-2) while Aberdare Region's Tetu High finished in second place after beating Gankanga from Highlands Region 3-0 (25-13,25-13,25-7).
