GSU keep winning run in Cairo

The General Service Unit maintained their unbeaten run at the Africa Men’s Club championships with an easy straights sets win over Muzinga of Burundi to book a spot in the last eight of the tournament which is being held at the Abdalla El Faysal Hall in Cairo.

GSU face a sterner test when they meet APR of Rwanda in a match that will pit Kenya’s national men’s coach against his women’s colleague.

Moses Epoloto, the GSU coach, remained optimistic will prevail over their opponents who are being coached by Kenyan, Paul Bitok.

The two sides will play on Wednesday while Tuesday is rest day.

GSU, the Kenyan men’s league champions, beat Muzinga 25-17, 25-17 and 25-20.

“The boys have shaken off their fatigue and are ready to face anyone. We are taking each game at a time, but I see no major problem in arresting the Rwandan side,” said Epoloto in a telephone interview.

On their way to the quarter-finals, GSU team had dismissed, Mugher Cement of Ethiopia (3-1), Ahly Beni Ghaz of Libya (3-2) and Sonel of Cameroon 3-1 in sets of 27-25, 25-16, 23-25, 25-16.

Thrilling win

Egypt’s Al Ahly cruised through to the quarter-final with a match to save in Pool A after their thrilling win over Olympic Chlef of Algeria 3-1 (25-15, 25-16, 21-25, 25-19).

FAP of Cameroon beat winless Liberte of South Africa 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-16) also in the same pool.

Defending champions, Zamalek of Egypt, clinched their second victory in a row by beating Prisons Service of Nigeria 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-15) in 59 minutes.

Paul Bitok’s APR of Rwanda continued with their winning rhythm to trounce VC Tonnere of RD Congo 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-13) in 62 minutes.

Ahly Tripoli of Libya maintained their superior performance and pulled off a straight sets victory over Inter Club (Congo Brazzaville) 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-21) in 67 minutes.

Mugher Cement of Ethiopia played their best to achieve their first victory in three matches over Muzinga of Burundi 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-21).
