Big field heads to Limuru Club for Serena tourney

The scenic Limuru Country Club course in Tigoni, currently in top condition, hosts Serena Hotels Annual Golf Day this weekend.

Usually a popular event at the club, Serena Golf Day has taken place annually since 2002, courtesy of its Group Managing Director Mahmud Janmohamed who is a member of the club.

But this year’s event will be different. Besides an array of prizes up for grabs, it is at the 19th hole where Janmohamed and his group have always played under par.  

But due to Covid-19 pandemic, club captain Fred Ikana has said there will be no prize-giving ceremony. Instead, winners will be notified on how and when to pick up their prizes.

Ikana and his chairman Dr. Caroline Wangari, are very grateful that despite the current situation, Serena Group agreed to sponsor the event which is the second event at Limuru since March.

“We have prepared the course well.  I have no doubt the strong field of more than 200 golfers will have an enjoyable day. The course is currently playing very well, the greens are in superb condition and the well-mowed fairways have never been better,’’ said Ikana, who has been in a very good mood lately and golfers can expect to have friendly placements of the pins to reward well-read putts.

“The weather has been very good too and so it should be a very enjoyable day out on the course.’’

Play will start at 7am, possibly to an enchanting, foggy, slightly eerie yet picturesque setting that is unique to Limuru Country Club.

Ikana however says the fog will most likely have ebbed away by the time the first team putts at the third green by the water. As golfers get used to dragging the 20kg golf bags through the course, it will be interesting to watch them climb the double doggy legged uphill, stroke index one, fourth hole.

During the last big event held at Limuru in July, Patricia Wangongu produced 44 points to win the “New Norm” golf event sponsored by the young members of the club. If she is still in that sparkling form, she will be one of the players to watch.

Kenya Amateur Match play champion Paul Muchangi, who is preparing to defend his title in two weeks at Vet Lab will be using this weekend’s event as part of his build-up for the Magical Kenya Open in November.
