Mukoswa, Koskei reign at Africa Masters

Former internationals Sabina Mukoswa and Vincent Koskei Thursday stormed to victory in their respective 400m races as the 13th Africa Masters Athletics Championships took shape at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Mukoswa, who represented Kenya in 200m and 100m races at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and Africa Senior Athletics, clocked 62.85 seconds to win women’s W35 category.

“It was an easy one for me and I am glad to win as I look forward to another victory in 200m tomorrow,” said Mukoswa, who is making her debut at the continental event.

Koskei, the 2010 Africa Senior Athletics 4x400m champion, dashed to victory 48.75 beating compatriot Christopher Anene to second place in 49.87.

“I am happy with the performance, this being my first time at the masters,” said Koskei, who represented Kenya in 400m hurdles at the 2012 London Olympics.

Koskei, the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games 4x400m silver medallist, will be hoping for a second title in the W35 400m hurdles on Friday.

Charity Wandia claimed the women's 400m W40 category in 73.19 while Ben Haij Silimani from Tunisia won the W65 400m in 1:49.66. Elizabth Muthuka claimed W45 in 400m in 64.37 while Caroline Kola clocked 87.72 to win the 400m in W60 category.

Robert Kibet timed 59.68 edging out Frenchman Thierry Zapha to win the men's 400 in M55. Zapha crossed the line in 60.80.

Emily Chepng'etich trounced Tabitha Wameri to take the women's 5,000m of W35 category in 17:22.86. Wameri timed 18:21.14.

Joyce Kirui won the women's 5,000m in W45 contest in 19:19.34 beating Anastacia Ndereba to second place in 19:38.66.

Kisii Police County Commander Farncis Kooli dashed to victory in 60m of men’s M50 in 8.12 seconds beating Cassien Ntahipmera from Burundi to second place in 9.76.

Mourali Said from Tunisia clocked 9.37 to win men’s M60 while Algerian Bouceta Smail timed 11.44 for men’s M65 all in the 60m final.

Kenya’s Ruth Mwende posted 11.70 to finish second in women’s W65 in the 60m final that went to Silimani from Tunisia in 11.50.
