Three students from Mombasa County tied in the first position in the Form Four exam results announced on Tuesday.

Zebunnissa Kassam Bagha, Sureiya Bagha and Paeann Nyale Kiti, from Memon High School, each scored an A plain with 84 points.

The school also produced the top girl in the 2013 examination, according to Principal Joseph Mwangi.

ELEVEN GIRLS

At the Aga Khan High School, 11 out of the 21 students who got plain As are girls, according to the principal, Ms Mariam Lavingia.

She said the performance was the school’s best so far. In 2006, when the school produced the top girl in the country, there were 15 As.

But she said that the grading of candidates was not good and called for a return to the old school ranking system.

“The current system is confusing and unfair. We have 21A plain and 21A-, most of whom are girls. But we can’t tell how well the school has performed.”

Memon had 16 As, 32A-, 28 B+, 22B, 21 B-, 10C, 2C- and 1C, with a mean grade of 9.67.

“Our school has been on the upward trend for a couple of years,” said Mr Mwangi. He said that the 16A plain grades in yesterday’s results were shared 50:50 by girls and boys.

MORE POSITIONS

However, girls scooped more positions out of the 32 A- grades. The school had 131 candidates in last year’s KCSE examination.

Memon Education Board Chairman Isaac Bagha heaped praise on the principal.

In the 2013 exam, the school produced 9A plain grades, 28A-, 23Bs and 24B-.

Mama Ngina Girls High School had 10A-, 23B+, 35B plain, 27B-, 19C+, 12C- and 5 C. It is one of the best public schools in the county.

Director of Studies Geoffrey Githinji said the performance was an improvement over the previous year.

“Our mean score has improved from 8.022 in 2013 to 8.4045. We had 131 candidates. We hope to do better in this year’s KCSE exam,” said Mr Githinji.
