Relatives of recruits wishing to join the armed forces paid Sh900,000 countrywide in attempts to join the disciplined forces, a senior military official has said.
The chief of personnel at the defence headquarters, Brigadier Gordon Kihalangwa told journalists at the Recruits Training School in Eldoret that the victims were unable to positively point out those they paid the money to.
“However, cases involving military personnel have been dealt with while those involving civilians have been handed over to the police,” Brigadier Kihalangwa added.
He said bribery had gone down considerably from the last recruitment.
With fake letters
The official said all the 1,800 recruits had reported to Eldoret while six people with fake letters were arrested and handed over to the police. One impersonated a recruit.
He said that during the recruitment from September 21 to October 22, many were arrested with fake certificates and ID cards and for trying to bribe recruiting officers.
He said the recruitment had been completed and warned the public against giving money to anybody.
Those recruited were general duty soldiers, tradesmen and women, sportsmen and women and constabularies.
The recruitment was carried out in districts and was monitored by the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission, the Intelligence Service and Transparency International.
