Water towers, forests top ministry’s list

The Environment Cabinet Secretary nominee Judi Wakhungu, if approved by Parliament, will have the tough task of spearheading the reclamation of water towers, an issue that has become a political hot potato.

The push to reclaim the towers, especially the Mau Complex, have had far-reaching political implications.

It was a referendum issue in 2005, an election issue in 2007, featured prominently in the 2010 referendum campaigns and swayed voting patterns in Rift Valley in the March 4 General Election.

Sound policies

Prof Wakhungu will, therefore, have to come up with sound policies to not only protect, but also increase the country’s forest cover.

She will also be expected to continue seeking compensation from industrialised countries to curb global warming especially during the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change meetings.

Other tasks include enforcing statutory mechanisms to eliminate air pollution and positioning the country as the continent’s carbon credit trade hub by establishing county carbon trading schemes.
