Muturi issues rules on stepping aside

What you need to know:

  • In that case, he said, an MP would be entitled to the normal salary but no sitting allowances as they would not attend plenary and committee sittings, for which they are paid Sh5,000 each time.
  • They would, however, continue to claim mileage allowance, which they usually do on the assumed basis that they travel to their constituencies by vehicle every weekend.
  • Mr Muturi said the letter was taken to his office, the secretary stamped it as received, but it was then taken back five minutes later, adding that the only letter he saw was a copy on WhatsApp.

An MP who chooses to step aside will be required to get the permission of the Speaker to be away from Parliament, Speaker Justin Muturi has said.

In that case, he said, an MP would be entitled to the normal salary but no sitting allowances as they would not attend plenary and committee sittings, for which they are paid Sh5,000 each time.

They would, however, continue to claim mileage allowance, which they usually do on the assumed basis that they travel to their constituencies by vehicle every weekend.

“If you want to be away for 60 days, I would have no problem. I would give the permission,” said Mr Muturi yesterday.

He said none of the MPs on the Public Accounts and Agriculture, Livestock and Cooperatives committees had written to him asking to be away from Parliament as the EACC investigates them.

He noted that while Budalang’i MP Ababu Namwamba said on Tuesday he had asked to be excused from all committee and House sittings, the letter had been withdrawn.

Mr Muturi said the letter was taken to his office, the secretary stamped it as received, but it was then taken back five minutes later, adding that the only letter he saw was a copy on WhatsApp.

Meanwhile, Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has stepped aside to pave the way for investigations into corruption allegations against him.

He wrote to the Senate Speaker last evening, informing him of his decision to step aside from discharging his duties as Deputy Majority Whip, and from participating in committees.

Deputy Senate Speaker Kembi Gitura confirmed receiving the letter and said the matter would be handled administratively.
