Jubilee leaders are now claiming that beleaguered Supreme Court Judge Philip Tunoi’s woes have been orchestrated by “powerful political forces positioning themselves before the next General Election”.
They say attempts to have Justice Tunoi ejected from the Bench are aimed at driving a wedge between Kenya’s political elite and the public.
Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter and North Rift governors led the Jubilee politicians in making the claims on Sunday in Kapsabet, where Deputy President William Ruto was the chief guest at the homecoming party of Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett and Livestock Principal Secretary Andrew Tuimur.
Justice Tunoi is Monday expected to face a special committee investigating allegations that he received a Sh200 million bribe to decide an election petition in favour of Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero.
The governors included Alex Tolgos (Elgeyo Marakwet), Cleophas Lagat (Nandi) and Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu). Mr Tolgos said Justice Tonui hails from his county and vowed that his community “would invoke traditional curses to identify those who were plotting the judge’s downfall”.
Mr Ruto steered clear of the controversy.
