MP Babu Owino re-arrested upon release

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has been re-arrested moments after his release by a Nairobi magistrate court.

Police pounced on Mr Owino moments after he walked to freedom at the Milimani Law Courts.

CHARGES

The lawmaker had been granted bail after spending two nights in police cells in the capital.

He was arrested on Monday for allegedly insulting President Uhuru Kenyatta during a campaign rally organised by his National Super Alliance (Nasa).

Mr Owino is facing charges of subversion and offensive conduct, as well as an alternative charge of incitement to violence.

It was not immediately clear why police re-arrested him but they are likely to prefer fresh charges against him.

But just when he breathed a sigh of relief, several police officers surrounded him and arrested him, resulting to chaos outside the Milimani law courts, as Nasa supporters and lawyers tried to protest the arrest.
Police bundled the legislator into a car and took him to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, DCI headquarters along Kiambu road for interrogations. It is not yet clear why he was re-arrested but sources privy to his arrest said he was arrested for incitement and assault.

He denied the charges.

Mr Owino was freed on condition that the two sureties are of equal standings in society with the accused.

The case will be mentioned on October 4, 2017.
