A police officer and a City Council askari arrest a hawker in Nairobi’s River Road in 1995. Several people were injured in the melee as the officers sought to keep the traders out of the streets.

Ghosts of colonial-era regulations that are haunting traders out of business

What you need to know:

  • Many of the rules enforced by county governments and their askaris were enacted by the European community that had no time for Africans and Indians.
  • The problem is that the rules are enforced by those who have no idea on why they were formulated in the first place.

I don’t know Nyambura Munyua of Thogithi.com. But this week, and on Facebook, she raised an important question that should be elevated to the national level.
