The government has declared Friday April 29 a national holiday following the death of President Mwai Kibaki, CS Fred Matiang’i has announced.

Dr Matiang’i, who is the chair of the National Funeral Steering Committee for the late President, said the day will be spent paying last respects to the former Head of State. A state funeral for the third president will be held at Nyayo National Stadium, Nairobi, on the same day.

“The Government declares Friday the 29th of April 2022 a National Holiday to accord the late President a befitting State Funeral vide a Kenya Gazette,” a statement by the CS reads in part.

“The State Funeral for the Third (3rd) President shall take place on Friday, April 29, at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi County with full Military Honours and Protocols.”

Kibaki, who died aged 90, will be laid to rest the following day at his Othaya family home after public prayers at Othaya stadium on the same day (April 30).

The body of President Kibaki will lie in state at the National Assembly Monday April 25 through Wednesday April 27 for public viewing that will be opened by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday at 10am.
