British envoy praises Uhuru for measures

British High Commissioner to Kenya Christian Turner has praised President Uhuru Kenyatta for the raft of measures he announced to fight corruption in Kenya.

In a televised address to the nation on Monday, Mr Kenyatta declared corruption a national security threat.

“I am glad that corruption has to be fought by everyone and am very optimistic about the future of this country,” said Dr Turner.

He spoke during a courtesy call on Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero.

Dr Turner urged Kenyans to uphold the Constitution.

He said that it was not his role to criticise Kenya but to represent his country.

“I have noticed that there is pressure from the public for the Government to perform and I believe that through devolution things can work,” he said.

Dr Turner will leave the country next week after his term in Kenya expires. He has been high commissioner since May 2012.

Dr Kidero praised the partnership between the UK and Kenya, saying it improved the way the country was viewed in the world.

“I appreciated you for being a good ambassador,” said Dr Kidero.
