Six people feared dead after pick-up collides with lorry in Kakamega

At least six people were killed in an accident involving a pickup truck and a minibus in the Muraka area on the Kakamega-Kisumu road on Tuesday.

Thirty-five people were injured in the 11am accident and were rushed to a Kakamega hospital.

The pickup was transporting about 20 mourners and a casket bearing a body when it collided with the 30-seater van.

The driver of the pickup was attempting to overtake a saloon car on a bend near a bridge, Western Region traffic commander Evans Gatembe said.

The passengers on the pickup were flung into a ditch.

Rescue efforts by the fire brigade, the Red Cross, St John’s ambulance, the police and residents were under way.

The accident caused a huge snarl-up on the Kakamega-Kisumu road.
