80 police reservists to help end bandit attacks

A total of 80 police reservists have been commissioned to help contain banditry in Mwingi.
The reservists, most of whom are youths, were recruited from the community and vetted by government security committees to supplement police efforts in maintaining law and order.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery said the reservists will undergo basic security training especially on handling of firearms.
“The reservists will be issued with firearms and uniform tomorrow besides being given the necessary training right here,” he announced when he visited Ukasi in Mwingi where 31 people have been massacred in gun attacks by suspected Somali bandits in the past 10 months.
Mr Nkaissery, who was accompanied to the area by Kitui Senator David Musila and MPs Joe Mutambu (Mwingi Central) and John Munuve (Mwingi North), gave herders who have invaded land 72 hours to vacate Kitui County.
Mr Musila urged the government to recruit more police reservists in Kitui South, Kitui East and Mwingi North sub counties, which are facing similar security challenges.
