What you need to know:

  • She recently released her debut album titled My Way
  • I learnt so much from him, especially about music production, as that is an area of huge interest for me.

1. You have done background singing for many local and international talents including Jason Derulo. At what point did you decide to go solo?

I always wanted to sing on the Coke Studio show way before I even became a background artist. Once I joined the singing crew, I felt an overwhelming desire to perform as an artist.

Little did I know it would come to pass during my second season as a background vocalist. When it eventually happened, it felt surreal. It was one of the best moments of my life!

2. Were there any   real-life experiences that informed your new album or is it all from imagination?

One of the songs in the album, Samahani, is an appeal to a lover I once hurt. One of my friends was in that situation and I thought it would be interesting if she could offer a sincere apology through song.

My Way, in its entirety, was intentional and personal. Every song you listen to was born out of a genuine circumstance. Creating it was such a therapeutic experience. It distracted me from the many challenges I was going through in my life.

3. The visuals for the  Samahani video are so flowery and beautiful. How would you describe your dressing style?

Thank you. Ankara is my true love. I love mixing it up with simple, urban styles. You can call me the simple African girl next door.

4. You are an alumnus of Sauti Academy. What are some of the important music skills you learn while there?

I mastered the art of live performing, and also understood my voice range and my songwriting abilities. The best part was the friends I made…quite priceless.

5. How does it feel to work side by side with a producer as experienced as Rigga?

Haha, I actually approached him via private message even before he knew who I was. Safe to say he ignored me, but I never gave up hope that we would eventually work together. And we did! This is someone whose songs I was listening to on replay while in secondary school.

I learnt so much from him, especially about music production, as that is an area of huge interest for me. The song we collaborated on also turns out to be a fan favourite! I am honestly grateful and honoured to have collaborated with one of Kenya's finest.
