Kenya Medical Training College has announced it will open a campus in Tana River County.

Governor Hussein Dado described the setting up of the first medical college as a milestone.

Mr Dado said Monday that the institution will admit the first batch of 100 students in September, which would be one of the ways of providing a solution to the health challenges facing the county.

“This is an exciting moment for all of us and for the future of health care in our county. It will create numerous opportunities for our people. We have waited for this for a very long time,” said Mr Dado.

The county chief said the KMTC Hola campus would be key in addressing shortage of health workers.

“In the end we shall have our own health professionals who are ready to serve our people residing in remote areas,” he added.

He said the county has secured 10 acres in Hola town for the construction which is set to commence immediately.

The county government will finance the construction while KMTC will take care of equipping the facility.

In the current financial year, Sh800 million has been allocated to health, an increase from Sh764 million last year.

Hola County Referral hospital is undergoing refurbishment since students will be trained there.

Philip Kaloki, KMTC Board chair, said the facility is up to standard.

“We have inspected the hospital and the facilities that will host the students. We are satisfied that they meet the standards required,” said Prof Kaloki.
