Fillister Murugi, who was a Form Three student at Gatugi Mixed Secondary School, met her fate on Sunday.
Her body was found dumped in a well.
Ms Ann Wanjiku said she left her granddaughter at home and headed to a church at the nearby Gatugi Shopping Centre.
Ms Wanjiku said on the way she met a man who used to work at her home as a farmhand.
When she came back, she was shocked to discover that her granddaughter was not at home.
After a long search, the teenager was found dead. She suspected the farmhand of committing the crime.
Nyeri South police boss Joseph Mwika, who led a team of officers to the scene, said they had already launched a manhunt for the farmhand, who hails from Nyandarua County.
“We have gathered a lot of information about the incident. However, we are not certain whether the farmhand is the main suspect,” said Mr Mwika.
He said they were holding a young boda boda rider who is said to have been called by the girl so that he could ferry her to Othaya Town.
A team of Red Cross officials and fire fighters from Nyeri was called to help in retrieving the girl’s body.
