Nyeri MCAs camp overnight at chambers ahead of Gachagua ouster motion

Police officers were deployed to the Nyeri County Assembly on Friday ahead of debate on an impeachment motion against Governor Nderitu Gachagua.

The officers were posted inside and outside the assembly.

Nyeri Central OCPD Masai Makau said police had information that some hired goons would try to disrupt the proceedings.

More than 34 members of the county assembly (MCAS) spent the night in the chambers awaiting the motion.

Kiganjo Ward MCA Baragu Mutahi is scheduled to move the motion.

"This vigil is for the people of Nyeri and we are determined to get rid of the governor," said Mr Baragu.

The MCAs spent the night singing gospel and Mau Mau liberation songs. Most had carried food and a change of clothes.

Journalists were asked to leave the chambers shortly after midnight.
