The body of Ragati tea factory’s immediate former director was Tuesday found in Sagana River, six days after he went missing.

Wilfred Murigu’s vehicle was found abandoned along the Karatina-Mukurweini road near Gatiki bridge.

A jacket Mr Murigu is said to have been wearing on the day he disappeared and his personal documents were found intact.

Police said, however, that his mobile phone was missing.

Possible murder

Mathira East DCI chief detective Nicholas Mutinda said investigations will establish what led to Mr Murigu's death. Mr Murigu lost his position during the tea farmers’ elections two months ago.

Mr Mutinda said mobile phone signals were traced to Mwea, Kirinyaga County, about 100 km away, leading them to suspect that the ex-director was murdered.

“The death is being treated as suspicious. We are looking at all angles. It was initially thought that he took his own life but we might rule out this theory,” he told the Nation in his office.

“We cannot rule out murder because all his documents, ATM cards and bank accounts have not been interfered with. We are waiting for data from mobile service providers to establish which line of investigation to take.”

The body was taken to Karatina Jamii Hospital mortuary.
