Covid-19: Nyandarua Woman Rep asks State to help the poor

Nyandarua County Woman Representative Faith Gitau has called on the national government to cushion the vulnerable Kenyans from the effects of coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking in Wanjohi Village, in Kipipiri Constituency on Thursday, Ms Gitau said that low income earners have been hard hit economically by the virus that has so far infected 649 and killed 30 Kenyans.
She said that most Kenyans have lost their jobs since many companies have either closed down or reduced their operations due to Covid-19.
“It is appalling to visit people in the rural areas and find them with no [face] masks, not because they are defiant [to Ministry of Health guidelines], but because they can’t afford decent reusable or disposable masks,” said the legislator.
Ms Gitau said that the Sh522, 000 which the government had given her office to help the locals fight Covid-19 was insufficient.
She asked locals to adhere to the Ministry of Health guidelines like social distancing, avoiding social gatherings as the county fights to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
She said that some beer dens that were often visited by revellers could lead to the spread of the virus.
The legislator donated face masks, food stuffs and hand sanitisers to the residents.
