Bishop Alexander Kipsang Muge… The Anglican bishop of Eldoret was a fiery critic of the Moi government at a time when nobody could oppose the President in the open and get away with it.

He died in a road accident at Kipkaren as he returned to Eldoret from Busia in 1991.

Prior to the trip, Cabinet Minister and Kanu hardliner Peter Okondo had warned him not to travel to Busia, which fell under his diocese, warning that he may not return alive. Mr Okondo quit the Cabinet after Bishop Muge’s death.

She teamed up with other firebrand MPs of the time like George Anyona, Mwashengu wa Mwachofi, James Orengo and Koigi Wamwere to keep the government on its toes from the back bench.

She is regarded as an inspiration by the many Kalenjin women who later joined Parliament.

Ms Mutai suffered ill health and retired to her home in Lessos, and has kept a low profile, returning to the limelight briefly a few months ago when Prime Minister Raila Odinga was seen taking her to hospital in Nairobi.
