What you need to know:

  • Speaker Benson Mutura is expected to preside over his first full plenary sitting after he was elected in July.
  • Last month, ODM fronted former Nairobi Mayor and Baba Dogo MCA Geoffrey Majiwa as its nominee for the position.

Nairobi County assembly is set to resume its sittings after more than a month in recess, with the election of a new deputy Speaker expected any time this week.

Speaker Benson Mutura is expected to preside over his first full plenary sitting after he was elected in July to replace Beatrice Elachi, who  resigned citing threats to her life.

Top of the agenda is the long-awaited resignation of Ruai MCA John Kamangu as the deputy Speaker to pave the way for a new holder of the office.

Last month, ODM fronted former Nairobi Mayor and Baba Dogo MCA Geoffrey Majiwa as its nominee for the position.

Mr Majiwa’s nomination was part of a deal in which the minority (ODM) backed Jubilee’s Speaker’s position candidate, Mr Mutura, in exchange for the deputy Speaker post.

The immediate business, however, will be the reconstitution of the House Business Committee.

The next business will be the constitution of a new Speaker’s panel after Ms Elachi disbanded the previous one earlier this year.
