What you need to know:

  • Shortly after Ngwele's return, Ms Elachi arrived at City Hall accompanied by several police officers.

Officials at City Hall are in a standoff following the return of Nairobi Clerk Jacob Ngwele.

Embattled Nairobi clerk returned to his office after months of being locked out by Speaker Beatrice Elachi.

Shortly after his return, Ms Elachi arrived at City Hall accompanied by a strong police contingent.

Ms Elachi and Mr Nwele are set to address parallel press conferences.

Only selected television journalists were invited to cover the speaker’s presser.

A section of ward reps who are perceived to be allied to the clerk were ordered out of the assembly.

“The speaker came immediately she was told Ngwele was at the assembly. We have been told to leave our offices and if we don’t then we will be taken to forced quarantine,” said one of the staff, who sought anonymity for fear of victimisation.
