Mombasa police nab suspect behind car break-ins

Detectives in Mombasa have arrested a man who is believed to be behind recent car break-ins.

Detectives in Mombasa have arrested a man who is believed to be among two suspected thieves who were captured on a CCTV camera breaking into a vehicle in Nyali.

The suspect, Boris Mutua Malai, was arrested at his home in Kiembeni in an operation led by the county Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Anthony Muriithi.

A Toyota Ractis car which Mr Malai and his accomplice allegedly used to commit the crime outside Texas Alarm building was also recovered.

According to CCTV footage which was widely circulated on social media, the vehicle’s registration number was KCP 113P.

But the DCI said that when it was recovered, the vehicle was bearing a different number plate – KCX 726Q.

Accomplices sought

“Following credible information from the members of the public, a team of detectives led by the CCIO Mombasa has arrested Boris Mutua Malai from home in Kiembeni and recovered a Toyota Ractis bearing registration number KCX 726Q,” said the DCI in a tweet.

It added that police have launched a search for the suspect’s accomplices.

In the footage, the man believed to be Mr Malai was captured together with another one who broke into a parked white vehicle.

The two first tried to break the front door but could not manage. After some time, they are seen getting back to the car where one of them opened the back door and came out with an unidentified item.

They then drove off in a Toyota Ractis car.

They are believed to have changed the number plates of the vehicle after committing the crime.

The incident happened on Thursday last week.
