A hospital proprietor and two staff members were on Wednesday charged in a Migori court over conspiracy to defraud the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).

The three – John Nono, proprietor of Gentontira Medical Center in Isebania town, Raymond Kyalo and Quenter Atieno – were arraigned before Resident Magistrate Hellen Maritim for allegedly forging claims amounting to Sh172,000 from patients.

This came after detectives nabbed them at the hospital on December 31.

According to charges presented in court, the three committed the offense on different dates between October 1 and October 30.

“The three accused persons are hereby charged with conspiracy to defraud NHIF by submitting fake medical claims for 28 patients worth Sh 172,000 in October 2020,” read part of the charge sheet.

Mr Mwita, was further charged with an attempt to obtain money amounting to Sh172,000 through false pretense.

The three denied the charges and were each released on Sh100, 000 bond with an alternative cash bail of Sh 50,000 each.

The case will be heard on January 20, 2020.
