Armed militia burn manyattas, loot primary school in Mandera

Armed militia Friday attacked two villages in Mandera County but no injuries were reported.

North Eastern regional police commander Patrick Lumumba said that the gunmen attacked Guba village Friday morning where they burnt several manyattas and looted a primary school.

“The houses burnt had however been vacated by the residents who feared for their lives,” said Mr Lumumba.

The police boss also said that there was another attack at Hullow but the details had not been given.

“The officers who went to the village have not communicated. There is a problem with the mobile network,” he said.

Mr Lumumba added that the Mandera County Secretary and Mandera North Sub-County Administrator had been interrogated over claims that they incited some youth to burn houses of a rival community.

He said that they had received reports that the two incited the youth and that they had been summoned for interrogation and also to record their statements.

At least 31 people have lost their lives since the fighting began between the rival Garre and Degodia clans two weeks ago.

Several houses have been burnt and property worth thousands of shillings destroyed.

Police also say that the fighting has left over 150 people injured.
