Three people perished in a road crash at Kathivo area near Kabati market along the Kitui- Kanyonyoo-Thika road.

The driver of a 14-seater matatu belonging to Kinathi Sacco, which was heading to Nairobi, lost control of the vehicle and rolled several times after encountering a diversion.

Police officers who visited the accident scene told the Nation that the driver may have decided to take the diversion on the road when he had already passed it resulting in the crash.

"This road is under construction but the driver must have been speeding when he realised he was about to hit a heap of soil blocking the road" said the traffic police officer.

A child died on the spot, while the other two victims were pronounced dead upon arrival at Kitui Level Four hospital.

According to Dr Virginia Muviku, the Medical Superintendent at the hospital, they received seven injured passengers including the matatu driver.

"The five had injuries of various degrees but we have managed to stabilise them and they're all conscious now" said Dr Muviku.

The bodies of the dead were taken to the hospital mortuary.
