An attempt by Kisumu Senator Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o to hold his first county development board meeting could fail after some leaders declined his invitation.

The meeting slated for Monday could hit a snag following the cold response by Kisumu lawmakers invited to the forum.

Kisumu Central MP Ken Obura said he had commitments in Nairobi and would not be available.

“Furthermore, such meetings require adequate preparations for us to articulate proper agendas,” said Mr Obura.

His Kisumu East counterpart Shakeel Shabbir said the notice was too short for him to make it to the meeting.

He said it made no sense for them not to meet in Nairobi to create a solid agenda for the county, only for the senator to give them a surprise call.

Much as Prof Nyong’o wanted to play his oversight role, he needed a change of strategy in dealing with the controversial issue of county development boards, Mr Shabbir said.

The remaining MPs could not be reached for comment.

Asked about the MPs’ concerns over lack of an agenda, Prof Nyong’o said the meeting would be more of inaugurating the board.

“I have received good responses from the invited participants; we did not communicate the agenda since there is no substantial matter before us save for the launch of the board,” he said, expressing confidence to meet the 18-member quorum for the meeting scheduled to start at 11am.
