Eight die, scores injured in Kapsabet-Chavakali road crash

Eight passengers died while several sustained serious injuries when a 14-seater matatu they were travelling in collided head-on with a lorry on Kapsabet-Chavakali road on Thursday night.

Witnesses said the matatu driver was attempting to pass through a group of people who were dancing along the busy road at Mutsava, about three kilometres from Shaviringa when the accident occurred.

Those who were injured were rushed to Kaimosi Health Centre and Vihiga County Referral Hospital for treatment.

Those who died and the injured passengers were from the matatu. The lorry driver escaped unhurt although he lost control of the vehicle which overturned.

Three ambulances were at hand to ferry the injured passengers to hospital for treatment.

Bodies of the eight passengers were taken to the county referral hospital mortuary in Mbale.
