Background and Charter Award

The Open University of Kenya (OUK), established on August 3, 2023 under Section 24 (1) (b) of the Universities Act 2012, is a specialised institution dedicated to fostering inclusive prosperity in Kenya through accessible, flexible, affordable and quality higher education. President William Ruto presided over the Charter award ceremony at Konza Technopolis.

OUK is more than just a university. It is a catalyst for change, poised to accelerate Kenya’s industrialisation through targeted education and training.

As an institution of national strategic importance, OUK is integral to Kenya's plan to achieve first-world status significantly faster by empowering Kenyans with cutting-edge skills and knowledge for a high-tech future by 2030.

Unique aspects and strategic priorities

OUK’s Vision of “Innovative University for Inclusive Prosperity”, speaks of the direction the instructional learning system must be designed to achieve inclusivity and flexibility.  Being low on touch and high on technologyapplication or use, OUK’s primary mode of delivery of instruction is online. To provide the hands-on learning experience in practical-oriented courses such as Nursing and Agriculture, OUK utilises virtual labs, simulations, physical laboratory sessions, field attachments and internships, among other learning assets.

The online delivery method that satisfies and enhances the desired flexibility and equity in terms of time for learners is asynchronous teaching. However, given the learners’ digital divide backgrounds, and hence the need to create learning level ground, first-year learners are supported through synchronous online teaching before transiting fully to the online asynchronous mode.

The distinctive features of OUK sets it apart from other traditional universities. Its uniqueness is derived from its inclusivity through Recognition of Prior Learning, unparalleled flexibility, affordability, accessibility and quality.

The University employs student-centric innovative approaches that include examinations on demand, entry and exit flexibility, and online course offerings. Flexibility is in terms of time, pace and place of study, which means that a student can go through the learning process at any time, at their own pace and from anywhere. On the other hand, accessibility is complemented with innovative technological support infrastructure using a modern Learning Management System that is accessible on common gadgets and platforms. The University employs a quality management system that aligns with the guidelines of the regulator – the Commission for University Education.

The key strategic priorities guiding OUK’s growthand development focus on delivering quality programmes, offering nano certificates, internationalising courses, increasing student enrolment, and leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) for educational enhancements.

Since the University was established for strategic national interest, it is implementing strategies aimed at enhancing access to quality education for all Kenyans by offering market-driven courses, scholarships for the needy, affordable fees, and flexible payment modes. It is also committed to implementing the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) model by offering programmes in the areas of health, agriculture, housing, MSMEs, and the digital and creative economy.

Student statistics, demographics, and support

As of July 2024, the student enrolment numbers and demographic data showa diverse student body from 18 countries. With 10,000 student sign-ups, 3,200 admissions and 1,400 enrolled, OUK has put in place robust student support services to create a successful online community. The University also supports students from underserved areas through flexible fee payment plans, whitelisted educational resources, affordable custom gadgets, and inclusive digital content.

Quality assurance and faculty excellence

OUK adheres to rigorous quality standards to ensure academic quality. It observes the requirements of accrediting bodies, follows the best practices of the digital learning circle, conducts thorough needs analysis of the current job market, and engages seasoned experts in curriculum development. The faculty comprises highly qualified professionals with significant research and online teaching experience.

Strategic collaborations

The University is establishing strategic partnerships with global institutions such as USAID, the World Bank, Arizona State University, Indira Gandhi National Open University, Catholic University of Milan, and the Commonwealth of Learning, to amplify its educational impact. Additionally, OUK is pursuing various local collaborations to develop local talent, including the potential establishment of OUK High School and partnerships with county governments to launch initiatives like Open Innovation and Open Entrepreneurship, for youth and people with disabilities.

Future outlook

OUK aims to expand its programme offerings to include competitive short courses, investment in cutting-edge technology and building state-of-the-art infrastructure. It will also adapt to the emerging trends in education and the needs of future students by embracing personalised learning, competency-based education, and technologies like AI and Virtual Reality (VR), to prepare graduates for the future.
