Police in Igembe Central, Meru County, are interrogating six students suspected to have started a fire that destroyed a dormitory at Njia Boys’ High School on Sunday night.

Property worth millions of shillings was destroyed in the dorm which was housing 160 students.

Njia Boys' principal Alex Karuma on Tuesday said the fire broke out at around 8pm while students were in the dining hall for supper.

“All students are safe and accounted for. We mobilised staff and fire fighters to contain the fire but all beds and students’ items were destroyed,” Mr Karuma said.

The Njia Boys’ fire came a day after a dormitory housing 130 students at Isiolo Girls’ High school was burnt down. Two days before on Thursday, 21 pupils died after a fire broke out at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Kieni Nyeri County.
