Golfers from countrywide clubs are headed to Nyahururu in Laikipia County this weekend for the annual Talitha Kum Children’s Home tournament at the high altitude Nyahururu Sports Club.

A charity event in aid of the home, which houses over 100 children drawn from Nyandarua, Laikipia and Nakuru orphaned by HIV Aids, this year’s event is once again being organised and sponsored by Fr Nicholas Kamau, formerly of the Nyahururu Catholic Church Diocese who is currently based at the Our Lady of Mercy Magumu Parish in Kinangop, Nyandarua County.

Fr Kamau, who has organised the event since 2017, will be supported by Melrot Wines and Spirits Limited with proceeds to be used in paying school fees and meeting other needs for the children.

The priest, himself a golfer and a member of Nyahururu Sports Club, has previously mobilised corporates to support the children’s home with some Sh405,000 raised from the golf contest since 2017.

Among the corporates that have supported the home which was established in 2005, is Nation Media Group which, in 2018, donated text books worth Sh100,000. “This year we have extended our invitation to our sister clubs of Nyeri, Ruiru, Nakuru, Naivasha and Thika Greens most of which have entered more than 10 golfers each, and I am truly grateful," said Fr Kamau, who hopes to raise about Sh150,000 as he celebrates his 10th year as a priest.

Limuru Country Club, which was the venue of the annual Serena Hotels Golf day last weekend, will stage the Restaurant Opener tournament which has attracted a small field. Club captain Fred Ikana is still accepting post entries.

At the par 72 Ruiru Course where the Christian Brothers Academy was rained off last weekend, will stage the June Mug this weekend, where a field of 200 players will be fighting for various Mugs.

At the Kakamega Sports Club, the Monthly Mug is being sponsored by Primelink Insurance Agency with a field of 100 players.
