National football team officials will next week start negotiations with East African Breweries Limited (EABL) over a new sponsorship deal, the Saturday Nation Sport can exclusively reveal.

The current three-year sponsorship deal between the two parties is nearing expiry.

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero, who previously chaired the now defunct Harambee Stars Management Board, negotiated a Sh110 million arrangement between the national team and the giant beer manufacturer, which was later announced by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in September 2011.

“We are interested in renewing our partnership with Harambee Stars,” EABL’s Corporate Relations Director Eric Kiniti said Friday on the sidelines of a function at State House where President Uhuru Kenyatta announced he would fund the team’s trip to Brazil to watch the Fifa World Cup.

“Both parties are interested in renewing the deal and we should announce the new deal within the next month. EABL will also launch a campaign to rally Kenyans around football activities,” Kiniti added.

This development should come as a big boost to Harambee Stars who are competing in the 2015 Africa Nations Cup qualifiers. Stars, who are scheduled to face Lesotho in a two-leg tie starting next month, have been relying on government funding since the turn of the year.
