Gor Mahia draw Zambian side in Confederation Cup play-offs

What you need to know:

  • The Kenyan champions were relegated to the Confederation Cup after being bundled out by Algerian side CR Belouizdad 8-1 on aggregate in the Caf Champions League first round

Gor Mahia will take on Zambian side Napsa Stars in the Caf Confederation Cup group stage play-offs according to the draw done on Wednesday at Confederation of African Football (Caf) headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.

The first leg will be played in Nairobi on February 14 with the return leg slated for February 21. The aggregate winner will proceed to the group stage. 

The Kenyan champions were relegated to the Confederation Cup after being bundled out by Algerian side CR Belouizdad 8-1 on aggregate in the Caf Champions League first round.

On the other hand, Napsa Stars proceeded to the play-offs on away goals rule after a 1-1 aggregate score against UD Songo of Mozambique.

Napsa Stars is home to former Gor Mahia players Shaban Odhoji and Timothy Otieno as well as another Kenyan Andrew Tololwa, formerly of Mathare United.

Gor has had mixed fortunes in the Confederation Cup in the past three seasons.

In 2018, Gor reached the group stages but failed to qualify for the quarter-finals stage after finishing third in a group that had Rayon Sports of Rwanda, Young Africans (Tanzania) and USM Algiers of Algeria. The Algerians topped the group while Rayon Sports finished as runner-up.

In 2019, Gor went a notch higher qualifying for the last eight after finishing  second in a tough group which comprised of  leaders Zamalek of Egypt, Petro de Luanda of Angola and NA Hussein Dey from Algeria.

Gor Mahia set a date with the defending champions RS Berkane of Morocco in the quarters where they lost 2-0 at home before being thrashed 5-1 in Morocco to bow out 7-1 on aggregate.

In 2020 season, Gor failed to qualify for the group stage after losing to DC Motema Pembe of Democratic Republic of Congo in the play-offs.

Motema Pembe beat Gor 2-1 in Kinshasa to progress 3-2 on aggregate having played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Nairobi.
