Equity coach frets over Wanyama's new deal

Equity Bank head coach David Maina is a worried man as star forward Mercy Wanyama is yet to commit her future to the club three days to the start of the Kenya Basketball Federation League.

Maina, who guided Equity to the national classic basketball league title on their debut in 2016 before finishing second last season, said he was disappointed that Wanyama is yet to renew her contract for the new season.

However, Maina is still hopeful the forward will sign before their weekend league match against Zetech University.

“Wanyama is one of our dependable players and it worries me that she is yet to make her mind whether she will don our colours which is unfortunate because a last minute decision on the contrary will make it difficult for us to get replacements,” he said.

OLUOCH, NGAIRA JOIN

He confirmed that they have acquired the services of Kenya international forward Rita Oluoch from Kenya University and Brenda Ngaira (Footprints) for the new season, having lost guard Sunday Norah who relocated to the US towards the end of last season.

Meanwhile, the Equity Bank men and Kenya Ports Authority women teams have been active in the transfer market.

Equity Bank, under the stewardship of former Co-operative Bank coach Carey “T9” Odhiambo, have roped in six players so far while women’s league champions KPA have recruited 10 among them four from Kaya Tiwi Secondary School.

Kaya Tiwi are fresh from retaining the Kenya Secondary Schools basketball title for the third straight year in Embu.

Odhiambo, who replaced coach Clay Oduor, has crossed over with international Kevin Kigotho and George Obumbo from Coop Bank.

Others are Dan Namunane, Chris Oluke, George Munene and Chris Juma from.

KPA women on the other hand have brought back Debra Obunga from Zetech University, Donasama Obonyo from Dolphins Uganda and Lilian Mboga - who had taken a sabbatical to join the disciplined forces.

Others are former Assumbi Teachers College stars Jennifer Atieno, Damaris Werunga and Scovia Anyango Mola.

Also joining KPA is former Shimba Hills guard Mitchell Oyoo from Nairobi Water.

The school girls include this year's KSSSA most valuable player Triza Othuon, Caroline Njeri, Yvonne Atieno, Lilian Ochola and Irene Anyango.

According to KPA Team Manager Chris Ogutu, the men’s team lost Ariel Okal to Seychelles and have had a relatively quiet transfer window, signing only John Wijaz from Kisumu Lake side and Dan Amon formerly of United States International University.
