Athletes preparing for World Under-20 Championships scheduled for Nairobi next year are confident of strong showing despite the challenges brought by the coronavirus pandemic.

However, a number of upcoming runners who were gearing up for the race will be locked out of the postponed meet due to age factor.

Athletics Kenya in partnership with Athletics Integrity Unit has been holding seminars for the young runners. Friday’s seminar was held in Kericho, the first was in Kitale followed by Eldoret. The Kericho meeting involved 10 athletes’ camps.

Edna Chepkemoi, a Form Four student at Mogonga High School was one of the participants. The youngster who has been training at Keringet in Nakuru County is eyeing a place in the team.

“The virus halted my plans, but I’m focused on competing in the steeplechase race,” Chepkemoi, who is inspired by Milkah Chemos, said.

Triza Cherotich, a Form Two student at Saramek High School in Kericho is preparing under coach Paul Kemei at Lemotit Athletics Camp.

AK Youth Development director Barnaba Korir, said the youths will be taken through doping training because most of them are still young and will soon compete on international level.
