Police gunned down two suspected robbers on Thursday morning on Kimathi Street in Nairobi.
The two suspects, who police said were part of a gang, were killed near a Total petrol station as they attempted to rob a shop in nearby Jamia Mall.
Five other gang members escaped on foot and were being hunted down, police said.
Police said a Glock pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition was found on one of the suspects.
Police said they had received a tip-off about the planned robbery and intercepted the gangsters just as they approached the mall.
Central Police Station OCPD Paul Wanjama arrived at the scene shortly after the incident.
MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC INJURED
“There was a member of the public who was injured during the exchange of fire, but he was rushed to the hospital and is in a fair condition,” he said.
Mr Wanjama added that police in Nairobi have recently been on high alert around Kimathi Street, after receiving information on planned robberies.
A door to the GTB ATM lobby was smashed during the exchange of fire.
The 7am incident attracted a huge crowd of onlookers.
Police had a hard time controlling the crowd milling around the area to get a glimpse of what was going on.
Scene-of-crime-scene officers took photos of the scene, including documents that were found on the suspects.
