Two people have died and several others injured after a bus that was heading to Imara Daima Estate rolled on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway on Monday evening.

Witnesses said the driver of the 32-seater bus, belonging to Indimanje Sacco, attempted to overlap resulting in the fatality.

"Two people have been confirmed dead following the Mombasa Road accident. Casualties are being treated at the Kenyatta National Hospital and Mater Hospitals," Traffic Commandant Jacinta Kinyua said.

Several people were trapped beneath the bus for hours before emergency rescue workers could access the scene on the busy highway.

Traffic was further worsened by curious on-lookers who parked their vehicles near the scene in an attempt to catch a glimpse.

In February, two students died and 33 others were injured after the driver of the bus they were travelling in lost control as he negotiated a sharp bend at Co-operative University College of Kenya in Karen.

The National Transport and Safety Authority indicated that the driver could have been drunk.

The authority's director, Francis Meja, then said through a press statement that the agency would rein in drivers of public service vehicles who contravene road regulations.
